How to improve your tan naturally

The Summer is just ahead and you are probably thinking of how to get that perfect tan safely and keep it for as long as possible!

In order to help you naturally enhance your tan during the sunny months, we have gathered some top beauty tips for smooth and radiant sun-kissed skin. But first, let’s go back to basics and understand what tanning is and how it works.

What is exactly tanning?

Tanning is a natural reaction the skin has to UV damage. When the skin gets too much sun exposure, the melanocytes - cells that naturally produce and release the pigment melanin - make even more pigment to protect the skin from damage. This ultimately makes the skin darker. Melanin has photoprotective and radical scavenging properties but this is not enough to combat photo-damage and it doesn’t replace the protection sunscreens provide.

Protect your skin

Apply the right protection by choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF30 or SPF50 that shields the skin against the damaging effects of UVA and UVB and prevents DNA damage.

Boost your antioxidant intake

There are many ways to prepare your body for the sun. Improving your skin’s defense against UV rays from the inside out will definitely help to support that healthy glow. Antioxidants are the best molecules to fight against free radicals. You can find them in all of our skincare products but because they’re so great for your skin we recommend that you top up your diet with antioxidant-packed food, like green leafy veggies, nuts, or colourful fruits to pack that extra punch.

Nourish your skin

A hydrated skin is a happy skin. Ensuring that your skin is moisturised will not only improve its appearance but will also prolong that sun-kissed colour. Soothe your skin and prevent any signs of dryness by applying a nice body oil. For example, Carrot and Apricot oils are incredibly gentle oils and are known for wonderfully enhancing that heavenly glow while keeping the skin soft and nourished.

And remember that tanning is generally not safe so don’t spend hours in the sun every day, just twenty minutes a day should be all you need to get your glow on.
